LECTURE

Week 1

Introduction to the module

Introduction to Design Innovation and Disruptions  & Creative industry positions review

Week 2

Research Findings’ Report and identifying the field of expertise

Report and discussion on current design for new design and technology trends. Substantiating the research information with case studies to identify the selected field of expertise to specialize and form a perspective.

And also Discussion on professional presentation standards and industry protocol.

MY IDEA PROPOSAL

3 ideas

  • Manpower App (example Fiver)
  • Car App Idea
  • Gynecologist App proposal

Week 3

Confirming the selected field of expertise and setting the project aims and objectives

Defining the scope for the design project by confirming the aims and objectives & Design artefact deliverables’ timeline

Mr. Mike highlighted that the proposed super app was too ambitious and out of scope. He advised focusing on traditional businesses beginning to digitalize, where UX design can significantly impact. The focus should be on companies with a unique selling point and 2-3 standout products or services that need digital transformation.

Next Steps

  • Research untapped or minimally explored businesses.
  • Generate 2-3 new ideas for such companies.
  • Identify how UX design can support their digitalization process.

Progress Update

  • Conducted research on more companies.
  • Gained new ideas for potential projects.

Week4

Feeback

Proposed an app for elderly order and delivery services with three stakeholders: the elderly, caregivers/family members, and e-hailing service personnel. Feedback highlighted that the linear user journey map lacked proper alignment of tasks, emotions, and opportunities for improvement. Advised to create detailed user journey maps for each persona and structure them correctly.

Next Steps

  • Create 3 detailed user journey maps (one for each persona) with tasks, emotions, and improvement opportunities.
  • Develop the app's information architecture (IA).

Progress Update

  • Finalized the app concept.
  • Created 3 personas but had to redo them due to incorrect formatting, with guidance from the lecturer.
  • Completed the flowchart

Updated persona style and flowchart

Week5 - week 6

Feeback

Created 3 user journey maps for the identified personas, but competitor analysis was missing. Advised to compare the app’s features against the top 3 competitors to highlight unique strengths. The user flowchart was misaligned with the user journeys and needs to be revised for consistency. Wireframe design must align with the flowchart and user journeys, supported by visual research and a moodboard. The art direction should reflect research-backed design choices and be presented with solid rationale.

Next Steps

  • Complete competitor analysis and create a comparison table.
  • Revise the information architecture and user flowchart to match the user journeys.
  • Develop wireframes in Figma based on the flowchart and persona interactions.
  • Research art direction and create a moodboard to guide the app’s visual style.
  • Justify the art direction with design rationale.

Progress Update

  • Competitor analysis completed and compared in a table.
  • Information architecture recreated.
  • Wireframe design started in Figma, aligning it with the flowchart and personas.
  • Began researching art direction for the app.

Week7 - week 9

PRESENTATION WEEK

app proposal

Feedback from two lecturers highlighted several areas for improvement:

  • Ease of Use for Seniors: Buttons need to be large and easy to use, with better content management to fit all features in the layout across three screens. Wireframes should showcase multiple layouts with main and urgent features for seniors.
  • Motivation for Seniors: The app lacks strategies to encourage seniors to use it.
  • Visual Hierarchy: Current design has large text but lacks visual balance. Suggestions include adding pictures and improving the visual hierarchy to align with competitive standards.

Next Steps

  • Update the proposal and information architecture.
  • Create a full wireframe covering all three personas with layouts for main features, urgent buttons, and content management.
  • Redesign button styles to suit seniors' ease of use.
  • Research strategies to motivate seniors to use the app.
  • Improve the low-fi prototype by enhancing the visual hierarchy with images and better design elements.

Progress Update

  • Proposal and Information Architecure updates are underway.
  • Started working on wireframes to address layout and button improvements.
  • Exploring visual hierarchy improvements based on feedback and competitor research.

Week10 - week 11

Feeback

Panel feedback was insufficiently detailed, requiring a rewrite with greater accuracy. Advised to revisit the journey maps for each persona, focusing on improvement columns and verifying tasks/features against successful app references. This will guide the design of appropriate wireframe features. Confirmation of the wireframe prototype and user testing is needed soon.

Next Steps

  • Rewrite and refine panel feedback for clarity and detail.
  • Update journey maps with improvements for seniors and other personas.
  • Verify features by comparing them to leading apps tailored for similar profiles.
  • Design app flow based on updated journey maps and verified features.
  • Finalize the wireframe prototype and prepare for user testing.

Progress Update

  • Panel feedback and journey map for seniors have been updated based on advice.
  • Next step is to align app flow with journey maps and implement verified features.

Week12

Feeback

  • Extensive wireframe design showcased the entire user flow for the elderly and family members, but the service provider’s flow is incomplete.
  • The current user flow for the elderly is too complex and needs simplification. The flow should be curated or managed by family members/caregivers, with pre-set appointments and service recommendations by the app.
  • A high-fidelity prototype must be created for testing with seniors, as they may misinterpret low-fidelity prototypes as incomplete. Testing with seniors is crucial to gather insights on user preferences and improve the design.

Next Steps

  • Simplify the elderly user flow and make the family interface clearer.
  • Complete the high-fidelity app design.
  • Conduct usability testing with seniors using the high-fidelity prototype and gather feedback for final data refinement.

Progress Update

  • Simplification of the family user interface is in progress.
  • Preparing the high-fidelity prototype to conduct senior usability interviews.
